Koopas
Koopas are
sort of like super-evolved turtles. Most of them are fully-sentient beings and
some of them even have wings, though I'm not sure if turtles were ever meant to
fly.
Regardless, many koopas live a peaceful life in the Mushroom
Kingdom, but many more have decided to join Bowser and Robotnik in their quest
for power. You can tell a good koopa from a bad one by the really tacky
sunglasses that the bad ones wear. Bowser calls his koopa followers "Koopa
Troopas" ... yeah, he's got a weird obsession with misspelling and things that
rhyme.
Speaking of Bowser, he's a koopa as well... albeit a giant,
mutant, highly-evolved one...
