Learn of Your Future Ruler
(Matt in a nutshell)
Help! Help! I'm in a nutshell!
Heh... heh...
Okay, enough of
that prattle. My name is Matthew K. Garner. Ask me what the K stands for and
I'll do something not nice to you. I am a Christian, preacher's son, and an
eccentric fledgeling cartoonist all in one, struggling between dead-end jobs and
living with my parents (and brother
and
sister) in North Carolina; and I'm old enough to know better. I have a
girlfriend (sorry, ladies): the almost impossibly perfect Heather Carey, and we
hope to get married sooner or later... once she graduates... and I actually make
some money. My greatest dream is to get paid just for doing what I love:
Cartooning... though I'll be just as happy as long as I can land a steady job
and raise a family with my beloved. My second greatest dream aside from marrying
Heather and making a living out of immaturity? Simple enough. Just making people
laugh!

Inspiration
(Who's
responsible for warping my fragile little mind?)
There's far too
many influences in my life to count them all, but some of the most noticeable
influences responsible for driving me absolutely nuts would be the Muppets,
"Mystery Science Theater 3000," the original Nicktoons (back when Nickelodeon
had quality material on it), and the "Simpsons"; a VERY small bit of animé such
as "Samurai Pizza Cats," "Pokémon," and "Hamtaro"; not to mention countless
underground cartoonists like Jhonen Vasquez (Invader Zim), Jeff Smith (Bone), and Steve Purcell
(Sam & Max).
general freakiness and psychoses all
around!
The Rich and Textured History of
Planet Z
(What inspires
someone like me to make comics -plus: quantum physics for
dummies!-)
This is the part where
I'm supposed to tell you about Planet Z... I guess. "Tales from Planet Z"
started with humble beginnings as a lot of EXTREMELY crappy drawings of a little
bug-eyed alien and a horribly-drawn Bart Simpson knock-off. The series had no
title until one day I realized how much I liked names ending in "IE", so I named
it "The Adventures of Hermie and Normie." In high school, I realized what a
stupid idea that was and totally revamped the series as an odd
Archie/Simpsons-esque series about nerdy highschoolers who collected comic books
and occasionally had run-ins with space aliens. (Normie was thankfully renamed
"Norman" or "Norm for short at this time). My life-long obsession with satire
and science fiction, and my growing unhealthy obsession... er, I mean fondness
for dark humor and the supernatural led me to once again recreate "The
Adventures of Norm" into a reasonable facsimile of the "Welcome to
Frackstonville" series you know today. More characters were added to
insult-er-represent all forms of the highschool outcast: Nerds, Airheads,
Gamers, Goths, Etc... and the formerly happy-go-lucky, if not slightly bizarre
cowtown of Frackstonville was relocated to a fault-line in the dimensional
gateway between the 2nd Dimension (where it all takes place) and Hell itself.
Nice, huh?
Somewhere around
late 2000, after a dangerous overdose of "Sam & Max: Freelance Police,"
Japanese cartoons, and red Kool-Aid, I created "Android Task Force" over the
span of almost literally one night. (The character of Ruby was actually inspired
a few months later by the character of Dib from "Invader Zim" and the songs
"Hotel Detective" by They Might Be Giants and "Domo Arigatou, Mr. Roboto" by
Styx... don't ask). And no, "ATF" is not supposed to be an imitation of
"Futurama" or "Time Squad"... Not entirely, at least.
*sigh*
Okay, almost done.
My brother,
cousin, best friends, and I had brainstormed numerous obscure sub-comics such as
"The Commando," "ActionPants Man," "The Mysterious Dr. X and His Incredible Knee
Machine," "Yon Kon Kook," etc. ("Ace and Avery" is a dark parody of a very weird
kids show from Canada and "Interviewer 67" is based on my miserable existance as
a telephone surveyer) and there seemed to be no place to put all these strange,
but hilarious ideas...
So, long story short... or well,
it's still a long story, but anyway...
With the advent
of the miracle known as the webcomic, there was finally a place to throw all of
these madcap ideas into one adorably psychotic mish-mash... And thus, "Tales
from Planet Z" was born!
And
now, you know... the rest of the story...
GOOD
DAY!
